Stages of Creating Animated Videos. Pipeline. How is a Video Created?
So, you’ve embarked on the journey of creating an animated video for your company or are still in the planning stages? Either way, you’ve probably wondered, “How does the process of developing my video unfold?”
Just tune in to this short article, walk with us through the entire path of creating an animated video, and we’ll guide you through what to expect at each stage of production as we progress.
Key Stages of Creating an Animated Video
1. Gathering and Processing Information about Your Project
Typically, in the initial stages of communication with the client, we always request them to fill out our technical brief. It includes questions related to product/service marketing (such as your target audience, the problem your product/service solves, positioning, Unique Selling Proposition, etc.) and the client’s personal preferences for the visual presentation of their future video (brand colors, voiceover preferences, duration, etc.).
After the client completes the Technical Brief, our specialists organize all the gathered information and, based on it, provide the client with proposals to address their video marketing needs.
2. Concept Development
The concept is the idea that will shape the narrative of the entire video. Based on the information and materials provided by the client, our scriptwriters develop three concept options. The client can then choose one of them or combine ideas to create a creative synthesis.
3. Script
The foundation of any animated video is undoubtedly a creative and captivating story. Once we have determined the direction (concept), we move on to developing a script that will skillfully and effectively convey your company’s core message to your target audience.
However, creativity alone is not enough. When discussing the collection of materials, we mentioned questions related to the marketing of the product/service. By studying and clearly understanding the audience the video should appeal to, our marketers tailor the script to a specific target segment. Additionally, when creating a script for an animated video, we utilize well-known narrative models from copywriting, such as AIDA or SCORE, TOTE, known to us from psychology and NLP.
4. Storyboarding
After the client approves the script, we move on to storyboarding. Its implementation can vary (hand-drawn or digital, colored or black and white), the main thing is that the client, based on the drawn frames, can understand how the final video will look, how the script will “play” – scene by scene.
Often, we provide our clients with a version of the finished composition. Essentially, it’s already the final video, but in static form. At this stage, all necessary edits and comments from the client are incorporated within the previously approved script. After approving the storyboard in this form, subsequent changes to the video sequence are not made.
5. Voiceover
You can convey any message to your audience using one or several professional voice actors from our group. We typically offer a choice of 5-7 voices, not more, but these voices are vetted by our experience and selected based on their proven performance.
We believe that bombarding the client with dozens of voices is simply pointless, as the client will still choose between 2-3 options. So why waste the client’s precious time?
6. Animation
So, the storyboard and style are approved, the voiceover is recorded, and we dive into production. At this stage, our video designers take full control. Sometimes, illustrators join them as well. This stage of creating an animated video can be truly magical. The images come to life, objects start moving and transforming, and text appears and disappears under various special effects.
7. Sound Design
The last and final stage is sound design. It’s amazing how a well-chosen composition and sound effects, tailored to accompany the visuals, can bring a video to life. It’s a fact: good sound design is 50% of your video’s success.
Summing up all the above, let’s once again outline the main stages of creating an animated video:
- Gathering and analyzing information about your project
- Writing 3 or more concepts
- Developing a unique script based on the selected concept
- Storyboarding
- Voiceover
- Animation
- Sound design
